Substitute Positions Overview

Position

General Responsibilities

Substitute Teacher

Delivers instruction in the absence of the regular teacher. Follows lesson plans, manages classroom behavior, supports student learning, supervises students, and provides feedback to the regular teacher. Long-term substitutes may develop lesson plans and assignments.

Substitute Teaching Assistant

Supports the classroom teacher with instruction and daily classroom activities. Works with students individually or in small groups, assists with lesson preparation, supervises students, tracks attendance/assignments, and provides additional academic or behavioral support.

Substitute Teacher Aide

Assists the classroom teacher in maintaining a productive and safe learning environment in the absence of the regular aide. Supports instruction, helps manage classroom behavior, provides student supervision, and may complete daily reports as needed.

Substitute Laborer

Assists custodial staff with building maintenance and groundskeeping. Performs cleaning tasks, moves equipment and supplies, sets up for events, removes trash and debris, and assists with seasonal duties such as snow removal.

Substitute Custodian

Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of school buildings and grounds. Performs cleaning, floor care, restroom sanitation, trash removal, and general upkeep to ensure a safe environment.

Substitute Bus Driver

Provides safe transportation for students according to established routes and schedules. Assists students boarding and exiting the bus and ensures student safety during transport.

Substitute Bus Monitor/Attendant

Supports student safety and behavior on school buses. Assists students with seating and seatbelts, helps students with special needs, supervises behavior, and may escort students to and from the building.

Substitute Food Service Worker

Assists with food preparation and service. Maintains kitchen cleanliness, handles food safely, operates kitchen equipment, serves meals, and may assist with cashiering duties.

Substitute Clerical

Provides administrative assistance including answering phones and emails, maintaining files, scheduling meetings, preparing materials, and general office organization.

Substitute Nurse

Provides routine and emergency health services in the absence of the school nurse. Supports student health needs, administers care as appropriate, promotes wellness, and helps ensure students are healthy and ready to learn.
